Round Lake from Veteran’s Park Charlevoix Original Painting is a plein air painting, meaning I painted it on site outside looking at the scene. Plein air is French for painting in the open air. I painted this one during a paint out with the Charlevoix Circle of Arts. The light changes and you have to paint quickly. This scene was a good experience for me because I had to paint over things a couple of times. The light changed on me because I was taking too long. When I turned the painting in at the end of the paint out, one of the seasoned painters came up to me and said “I’m glad you finally made it in! I thought you were going to be there all day. I’ve never seen anyone take that long on a painting… I thought you were going to paint it to death!” I was a bit taken aback but I guess, according to others, it is normal for this gentleman to be a little blunt. Oh well, I’m a detail person and I need to teach myself to loosen up and paint quicker, thus looser, so that I can “capture the moment.” Still, I was proud of how the boats and water turned out.
